The project brief was to create a pedestrian and cycle bridge in Moganshan, China that utilizes the natural environment of the mountains as a source of inspiration and an integral part of the design. The design should emphasize the natural structure of the terrain and draw attention to the surrounding landscape while also integrating public space and the natural landscape. Additionally, the project aimed to increase the ecological value of the bridge and promote environmental protection and sustainable development in the area.

The challenges of the project included designing a bridge that was both functional and aesthetically pleasing while utilizing the natural environment. The project also had to meet flood water drainage requirements and provide unobstructed flow for pedestrians with constant width and step-free accessibility. Additionally, the project had to integrate new materials, such as light-transmissive and energy-storing concrete, to increase the ecological value of the bridge while meeting environmental protection principles and appropriate design principles in China.


Our solution was to design a bridge that emphasized the natural structure of the terrain and drew attention to the surrounding landscape. The bridge was rotated 15 degrees in relation to the wall, creating an innovative approach to the integration of public space and the natural landscape. To increase the ecological value of the project, the wall was made of translucent and ecological concrete, such as light-sensitive concrete. The bridge construction system consisted of two main elements - the wall and the footbridge - which were inseparable, providing stability and durability during use. Additionally, the project involved rainwater drainage systems, water quality improvement, and the creation of a green zone around the bridge to improve air quality and increase ecosystem resources.
